The Arts Center Jazz Ensemble
is comprised of players from many west suburban communities with many
different playing backgrounds. The band maintains an active playing
schedule throughout the concert season, appearing with such world-renowned
performers as Louis Bellson, Clark Terry and J.J. Johnson. The professional
level of the group is demonstrated in its diverse and ambitious programming,
reflecting both the past resilience and the present ingenuity of the
big band jazz idiom. Open auditions are held every September; interested
qualified musicians are encouraged to participate.
Tom Tallman (Music Director) is assistant
professor of music at College of DuPage, where he teaches courses in
beginning and advanced music theory and jazz appreciation. In addition,
he oversees the jazz performance area, which includes various small
jazz groups, and serves as music director of the Jazz Ensemble. Prior
to coming to College of DuPage, he taught jazz courses at the University
of Texas at Austin and worked as a free-lance musician in the central
Texas area.
