Summer Weekend Studies combines three five credit classes in one integrated program. A required orientation of about three hours during the first week of the quarter presents syllabi and first assignments due on the first weekend of class. Classes then meet on five alternate weekends during the quarter, usually starting with the last weekend in June.

The program combines independent components such as film-viewing, projects, reading journals, and web-based discussion along with intensive classroom sessions with instructors. Class meetings use a variety of methods to present material and apply concepts. In any one weekend, students will encounter any number of the following: active discussion, lecture/discussion, small group activities, reflection, film(s), and simulation/role-playing.

Instructors are usually present the whole weekend session and hold office hours before and after each day's session. They are also available by phone between classes.

Successful students are highly motivated, persistent, organized (well, they try), and deeply committed to making learning a top priority. Students usually spread homework and independent components over the whole two weeks between sessions, including the weekend. It is wise to use the first evening after class to lay out the assignments and establish a schedule for reading, viewing, and writing.

Successful students also keep in touch with one another for encouragement, discussion, film-viewing, and generally talking over assignments. They arrive to class punctually and commit themselves to the entire session.

With the above in mind, most students experience a rich learning environment that stretches them intellectually and personally and that--along with the rest of the program--prepares them well for higher level academic work.
