Analysis in the arts often involves examining the impact of visual images.

Below are two versions of the same photograph.  Study each, focusing for at least 10 seconds at a time.

Where does your eye go first? Next?
What stands out to you?
What response does each elicit?

Can you list the details of each photograph that contribute to your response?

Capitol, Washington, D. C., 2/28/99

Capitol, Washington D.C., 2/28/99, grayscale

Each image is also about its subject matter, which happens to be the national Capitol building in Washington D. C.

The color version is the original one. However, rendered in"grayscale," the image conveys a different impact.

How does it affect you? Can you begin to analyze why? Can you do so without resorting to likes and dislikes, but just concentrating on the details of the images themselves?
