 Course Description

The Writers' Group is for people who love to write and seek the camaraderie of other writers. This course provides a framework for assignments and deadlines while allowing students to design individual goals. In class, by using writing and other relevant activities, we will --

respond to one another's work,
examine the approaches of recognized authors where appropriate,
explore our creative processes.

 The Summer Seminar ...

is specially designed for students who have had Writers' Group at least once or by permission of instructor.

Focus is on completion of student writing goals and establishing a strong sense of community in which to work.

The course will culminate in a portfolio of polished pieces and works in progress.

 Course Requirements

1. Attendance: In small group of ten or so, each person's presence and contributions help create the class atmosphere for every other student; therefore attendance at each session is expected. Each person's response to writings gives important feedback for the writers. Two or more absences may result in lowered final grade.

2. Attitude: Since we wish to establish community, it is necessary that each one of us approach our class gatherings with a positive and supportive attitude. Our commitment needs to be to the growth of ourselves and others as writers; therefore, it will be helpful to maintain an openness to experimentation, to playfulness, to unusual ideas, to sharing our responses, and to receiving the responses of others. All of these attributes will aid us in maximizing our individual and collective creativity.

3. Class Participation: Participation includes punctual arrival in class, preparation of readings and written homework, willing participation in class activities, active contribution to group activities and class discussion, and genuine effort applied toward in-class writing.

4. Submission of work on a weekly basis: Students select their own writing projects and bring in progress weekly. Some students focus on revising work from previous quarters, while others simply continue on with their projects.

Procedures: Class meets weekly during Summer Quarter. Students are expected to bring their own writing projects to class and share progress.
Participants need to make enough copies of their work for everyone in the class (about 12, including instructor) and take turns reading their work aloud for questions and responses. Work may be fairly raw, especially if revisions are planned. During Summer Quarter, the whole class of participants serves as a good-sized "small group."

Grading: Students may elect to take this class for "Satisfactory" grade or for standard letter grade. Satisfactory option is recommended for anyone anticipating several absences. Letter grades are preferred if students contemplate using the course for transfer to another institution.

Students should be aware that 1/288 courses transfer at the discretion of the transfer institution. Contact that school for more information.

 Assignments/Written Work

a) At each formal group session, students are expected to present a piece for group critique. A "piece" is a small collection of poems, a story, an essay, a chapter from a longer work, or the equivalent.

b) By the end of the quarter, students should submit a portfolio of work accomplished, including at least three "polished" pieces in addition to copies of works in progress and/or updates on such work.

Point Scale: 10% "spread" (90-11=A, etc.)
Attendance 3 each class, 30 for the quarter
Writings (weekly) 10each for 90 total points
Portfolio/final piece               30

Total 150 points
