Writing Poems, 4th ed. By Wallace and Boisseau (Harper Collins, College Publishers, 1996)

This first text provides the student with background in technical practice and includes a number of "Poems to Consider" in each chapter. It will be an invaluable reference for those ideas and terms we all expect "poets to know." We will dip into it for background and resources.

The Practice of Poetry: Writing Exercises from Poets Who Teach, edited by Behn and Twichell (Harper Perennial, 1992).

The second text is exactly what the title promises. It provides an assortment of practical insights and exercises, along with examples, for those who wish friendly professional guidance about composing and evaluating. This text will structure the class focus each week.
