WEEKEND STUDIES  for Working Adults

Weekend Fall

 Humanities 101 (5 credits), English composition (all levels available, 3 credits), and Speech 100 (5 credits) for a total of 13 quarter credit hours.
See also--Architecture/Sculpture

 Winter

 Introduction to Sociology 100 (5 credits), Social Psychology 240 (5 credits), and English 102 or 103 (3 credits) for a total of 13 quarter credit hours.

 Spring

 Biology 110 (Man and the Environment, 5 credits), Biology 188 (Environmental Issues, 5 credits), and all levels of English composition available (3 credits). Beginning Spring 2000, a Physical Science is planned to replace the Biology 188 in compliance with the Illinois Articulation Agreement for easier transfer to in-state institutions. Total of 13 quarter credit hours.

Summer

 Sociology 220 (Sex, Marriages, and Family, 5 credits), Humanities 102 (Ideas and Values, 5 credits, and English 135 (Film as Art, 5 humanities credits) for a total of 15 quarter credit hours.

 Students seeking the Associate of Arts degree may earn most of their general education core requirements in a single calendar year (with the exception of Math). Program meets 5 alternate weekends plus one introductory meeting per quarter.


CREATIVE WRITING

  Writers' Group

 English 188 or 288, 3 credits. Committed writers contract with instructor their own writing agendas for grade or "satisfactory" credit. Weekly progress submissions and small group feedback, occasional large group presentation, weekly instructor feedback. Exploration and experimentation encouraged. Students supply copies weekly for small group and once or twice for large group.

 Year Round

Writers' Group Summer Seminar

 English 288, 3 credits. For those who have taken one quarter of Writer's Group or another workshop-style credit class. Session runs like one large "small group" of about 10 students who share work weekly, supplying copies for group and reading work aloud. A good way to polish a portfolio. Usually offered on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings throughout the 10-week summer term. Summers 

 Poetry Writing

 English 152, 3 credits. Combination of assignments, student agenda, discussion, text readings. For serious poets or those who want to give it a serious try. Exploration and experimentation encouraged. Students supply some copies for group reading.

 Spring 99

  Mastering the Craft

 English 288, 3 credits. The best teacher of writing--except for writing itself--is other writers of stature. Emphasis is on close reading and analysis in order to sharpen our writer's judgment. Reading response/experimentation journal and three papers: analysis and creative  ( 2 of one and 1 of the other--writer's choice). Large group sharing of student writing is optional.

OTHER CLASSES

Mel, Clint, Meryl, & Me: Exploring Film as Art

 English 135, 5 credits. Sometimes offered with English Composition, 3 credits (all levels) as an 8 credit program. Study recent and classic feature films to understand them as works of art that express the full spectrum of what it means to be human. Discover how artistic composition and technique impact our viewing whether consciously or not. Students view and discuss 5 films in class and nearly 10 more outside of class. Access to video and vcr a must. Offered most Winter Quarters.

Exploring Creativity

 Humanities 290, 5 credits. Emphasizes application of theories of creativity to life at work, school, and leisure through readings, exercises, journals, and projects. Very interactive.

Awareness: Explorations for Writers and Artists

 Humanities 288, 5 credits. The best literary and visual artists demonstrate heightened awareness to many aspects of life. In class, we emphasize developing sensory perceptions through careful observation, developing insights into human behavior and interaction, and exploring complexity in human and natural events. Readings draw from the arts, sciences, and social sciences.
