Permits
Students who require a permit to register must (1) present it in person at the time of registration, or (2) have it on file in the Registration office and register by phone. The list below includes the various types of permits used by faculty, advisers and students.

Counseling Hold/ Permit: Students with a counseling hold are required to meet with a counselor to obtain a registration permit. For more information on academic progress leading to a counseling hold, view the Standards of Academic Progress.

Honors Registration Permit: Students wanting to enroll in an honors section must obtain an honors permit. Permits can be obtained through the Honors office.

Instructor’s Permission to Register for a Class: When a class has already met, or is full, students may still be able to register for the class with the instructor’s permission. Students need to obtain the permission in written format from the instructor. It is not necessary that the permission is provided on the official form. However, it must include the instructor’s signature and applicable course information.

Overload Permit: Overload permits signed by an adviser or counselor are required for students wishing to take 20 to 24 credit hours. Students wishing to carry 25 hours or more must have a permit signed by a counselor. To be eligible, students must have a minimum GPA of 2.0.

Reading Permit to Register: Students required to enroll in a Reading course need to have a permit to register. Permits can be obtained from general advisers or counselors.

Petition for Graduation and Certificates
Petitions for graduation for a degree or certificate are available in the Records office, SRC 2015, (630) 942-2261. It is suggested that a student complete the petition at least one term in advance.

Personal Identification Number (PIN)
Personal Identification Numbers are printed on registration appointment letters. New students that have received an acceptance letter must select a PIN and returning students may change their PIN through touch-tone registration at (630) 942-3555, press 3.

Placement Testing/Pre-Course Testing

Students may be required to complete pre-course testing in reading, writing and math. Student can prepare for the math placement test by reviewing sample test questions on the ACT website. Students are able to take the exams only twice in one calendar year. To determine if pre-course testing is necessary for your course of study, refer to course and program requirements. For an explanation of test results, contact General Advising (SRC 2044) at ext. 2259.

Reading Assistance Center

Reading Permit to Register
Students required to enroll in a reading course need to have a permit to register for all/any classes. For students not currently enrolled in a reading course, permits may be obtained from general advisers or counselors. Students currently enrolled in a reading course must obtain registration permits from their instructors. Many courses require reading competency as a prerequisite.

Repeating a Course
A student may repeat any course taken at C.O.D., but credit will be granted only once and only the higher grade will figure in the GPA. The lower grade will be converted to an “R” and will not affect GPA. Transfer schools may or may not use both grades in GPA calculations. Consult an adviser for more information.

Registration
