Ron Jerak is a counselor and professor in the Counseling and Advising department.
He is a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and an Illinois
Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC). He received his
master's degree in counseling from Northern Illinois University and
his bachelor's degree in math and computer science from the University
of Illinois at Chicago. Ron began teaching at College of DuPage in
1985. He taught in the Computer Information Systems department (CIS)
both as an adjunct faculty member from 1985 until 1990, and as a
full-time faculty member from 1990 until 1998. Ron was the co-coordinator
of the CIS department in 1997-1998. After receiving his master's
degree in counseling he transferred into the counseling discipline
at C.O.D. in 1998. Ron has recently completed certification as a
Family and Divorce Mediator, as well as coursework on “Aggression
in the Classroom” and “On-Campus Violence.”
As a counselor, Ron enjoys the combination of one-on-one sessions
with the students/community members, as well as the classroom teaching
experience. Ron teaches the Career Development (EDUC 1105) course
and the Interpersonal Communications (EDUC 1110) course, as well
as College Arithmetic (MATH 0460) and Beginning Algebra (Math 0481).
His favorite course to teach is the Interpersonal Communications
course, for it involves such a variety of interpersonal activities
and non-traditional learning experiences. Ron's counseling style
is deliberately eclectic, though he finds himself gravitating toward
the Rational Emotive (Albert Ellis) school. Though he doesn't claim
to be a perfect adherent to the “Golden Rule,” he does
try to treat others as he would like to be treated.
