Teens as Leaders

There are many characteristics and traits that make successful leaders. The following are some of the leadership skills that Student Leadership Academy values and focuses on in our sessions.

1. Communication

Everyone communicates on a daily basis. Whether your communication be verbal or non-verbal, it must be clear and effective. Effective communication helps you expresses your emotions, thoughts, ideas, and reasoning to everyone in a professional manor.

2. Listening

Knowing someone is listening to you makes you feel acknowledged and understood. Listening is not just through; your ears though, your body language, reactions, and responses can be just as important.

3. Honesty & Integrity

Although this seems obvious, as a leader you are purposely or inadvertently setting an example for those around you. The smallest indiscretion can lose the trust of co-workers. It is important to maintain trust because it has a large impact on morale.

4. Encouragement & Positivity

Leaders should be positive and encouraging to maintain a motivational environment. Negativity can be contagious and make the work environment very discouraging and unproductive. Positivity can be just as contagious and is an important leadership skill.

5. Work Ethic

Having a good work ethic not only helps you make your way up the "ladder", but it also builds morale with colleagues. Leaders that delegate but never roll up their sleeves to help out can create a frustrating and negative work environment.
