Service to Profession

Harvard University Co-Researcher, National Research Study investigating students' choice of STEM careers. "Female Representation in Out-of-School-Time Science (FROSTS),” Fall 2017-present. Worked together with Science Education Department at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics to address the main question whether out-of-school-time science activities increase students’ likelihood of having a STEM career interestat the startof college (all intended majors enrolled in English classes). Assisted in recruiting and surveying participants in freshman English classes at College of DuPage.

Blog Exchange, 2016-present. Worked with the founder of FactSumo (www.factsumo.com), the learning app that helps students “learn anything in 5 minutes.” Exchanged blog posts on each other’s websites. For example, FactSumo shared my Day 98 blog about using clickers as a tool in the classroom to share how to effectively bring technology into the classroom.

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Education Policy Webinars, 2013. Dialogue with teachers, administrators and learning assistance professionals regarding trends, controversies and assessment tools within our field.

Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) Technical Preparatory Grant, 2012. Worked with community college and high school faculty committee to draft and submit a grant to support students seeking education and careers in work-based, technical fields.

Departmental/College/University Service

Sustainability Campus Committee, College of DuPage, 2017-present. Appointed to advocate for sustainable initiatives including expansion of natural areas, revegetation of pond shorelines, reintroduction of bioswales in parking lots, solar panels on roofs and re-examination of recycling practice.

European Studies Committee, College of DuPage, 2016-present. Participate with faculty to promote understanding and appreciation of European countries, languages and cultures by hosting events in collaboration with European cultural, educational, artistic and diplomatic organizations.

Learning Technologies Steering Committee, College of DuPage, 2016-present. Appointed to represent our department as stakeholders in Instructional Technology.

New Faculty Institute, Co-Presenter, College of DuPage, 2016. Worked with a team of College of DuPage English Professors and Instructional Designers from Learning Technologies to present “Introduction to Online and Hybrid Delivery Formats.”

Chair, Teaching with Technology Committee, College of DuPage, 2015-2017. Appointed by administrator to lead committee in comprehensively examining and enhancing English and ELL Department practices for teaching with technology. Issues that fall under the auspices of the committee might include gathering and disseminating best practices, auditioning and assessing new technological tools, and reviewing online and hybrid course shells.

Writing and Reading Assistance Area Advisory Committee, College of DuPage, 2014-present. Worked with team of faculty, staff and administration to review student appointments, workshops and supplemental materials offered to students who request assistance in writing and reading. Reviewed online videos, advertising and classroom visits to promote increasing English as a second language (ESL) student appointments within the Learning Commons. Assisted in designing placement and exit testing workshops for student success.

Teaching and Learning (TLC) Workshop, Co-Presenter, College of DuPage, 2014. Worked with team of faculty to discuss changes in technology regarding our learning management system.

Curriculum Developer, College of DuPage, 2012-present. Submitted proposal to Office of Instructional Development (OID) to review online curriculum with faculty and research best practices. Re-designed English 1101, English 1102, English 0492 and created the first English 0482 course available online at College of DuPage.

Co-Creator, 2011-2012. Developmental Education DVD, College of DuPage. Scripted, produced and participated in a mini-movie (DVD) with faculty and students to heighten awareness of our developmental offerings in writing, reading and mathematics. Reviewed the definition, purpose and long term success students experience after completed developmental courses at College of DuPage. View Video

Early Alert System, College of DuPage, 2011-present. Collaborate with counseling and advising staff to identify students who struggle academically. Co-author documentation to create follow up communication with at risk students to encourage them to come to our offices and discuss how we can help them succeed.

Professional Writing (Technical Writing) Committee, College of DuPage, 2010-2017. Worked together with faculty and administration to review College of DuPage Professional Writing Certificate, reach out to community members to organize Advisory Board, created marketing pieces for courses within program.

Innovation Incubator. Co-Presenter, College of DuPage, 2009. Collaborated with College of DuPage Human Anatomy Professor to integrate a reading strategy into her classes. We monitored grades and study habits throughout the semester.

Quantum Leadership Academy, College of DuPage, 2009. Collaborated with fellow faculty to share series of effective reading strategies within content specific disciplines including Biology, Heating and Air Conditioning and Algebra.

Coordinator, Center for Independent Learning, College of DuPage, 2006-2008. Facilitated faculty meetings, ordered textbooks and materials, scheduled faculty teaching appointments, monitored curriculum revisions, revised 17 English Composition syllabi with faculty committee.

Student Success Grant, College of DuPage, 2007. Worked with a team of faculty and administrators to co-author grant proposal to provide services for at-risk students (students identified as underprepared) to receive a case manager/counselor to advise registration in developmental coursework to help reach students’ educational goals.

Faculty Senator, College of DuPage, 2005-2007. Elected by faculty to serve 2-year term. Worked in system of shared governance. Made recommendations regarding school calendar, budgeting and academic freedom. Fielded concerns from fellow faculty via e-mail, phone and in person regarding college and department policy, welfare and student conduct. Worked with a variety of disciplines to discuss joint concerns in the best interest of the institution and our district.

English Tenure Track Faculty Search Committee College of DuPage, 2007, 2012. Appointed by administration to work together in selecting qualified applicants who best meet the needs of students, the Liberal Arts Division and College of DuPage. Developed advertisement of position, a rubric for screening qualifications, participated in series of interviews in person and via Skype, observed classroom demonstrations and conducted tours of College of DuPage facilities for faculty finalists.

Foundations of Special Education, Northern Illinois University, 2001. Completed graduate school course researching contemporary changes in philosophy, objectives, teaching in diverse cultural settings, curriculum, methods and evaluation materials.

Chair, Institutional Reading Committee, College of DuPage, 2000-2007. Worked with counseling, advising, faculty, ESL faculty and administration to oversee Reading Competency Requirement which states all students are required to take a reading placement test before enrolling in college-level courses at College of DuPage. Developed communicative pieces for students including a brochure, bookmark and posters to explain the placement process in placement, curricular offerings and exit testing.

Enduring Purposes Team: Developmental Education, College of DuPage, 1999. Co-authored report developed to help College of DuPage faculty explore and respond to results of 1998 ACT/CAAP testing. Worked together to develop and refresh an understanding of general education, identify courses with general education competency requirements and investigate how to improve support in helping students plan and achieve academic goals and competencies.

Reading Assistance Area Design Committee, College of DuPage, 1997-1998. Worked with faculty, staff and administration to develop the first Reading Assistance Area at College of DuPage. Met with architects and engineers to design a comfortable and inviting space where students and faculty can meet to discuss assignments, gather for Book Club meetings, and access literacy materials in a variety of formats. For students who identify via College of DuPage’s Center for Access and Accommodations, students with disabilities are ensured another resource area to provide support services on campus.

Coordinator, Reading Competency Requirement, College of DuPage, 1997-2001. Appointed by the administration to conduct norming sessions with adjunct and full-time faculty in relation to our placement and exit tests for developmental reading students. Worked with academic advisers and counselors to prepare students for success in college. Archived and shared data regarding retention and graduation among students placed in developmental reading courses. Worked with satellite centers to share information regarding testing, advising and placement. Engaged in exit exam design research every term to monitor results and vary materials for students. Developed reading course sequence for students identified as needing assistance to prepare for college-level reading.

Community Involvement/Outreach

Pre-School Volunteer, Henna School, January 2017. Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. Donated school supplies and worked with children learning alphabet games and senses songs.

COD Cares Crew Chief, 2016. Actively support and strengthen District 502 by participating in a variety of community service projects like “Fall day of Action,” cleaning up our prairie grasses and harvesting seeds for future growth.

Spring Break Volunteer, Re-Member Organization, 2016. Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota. Organized donation drive collecting soap, toothpaste, shampoo and hair brushes. Built wooden bunk beds, wheelchair ramps, repaired trailer skirting and outhouses for the Lakota community.

Sailing Board Secretary, Saugatuck Children’s Sailing Program, 2016-present. Record and publish meeting minutes for Western Michigan sailing program. Participate in promoting water safety awareness and US Level Sailing activities including coastal navigation training, regattas, and recreational sailing.

Spring Break Volunteer, IVHQ International, 2014. Barrio Cuba, Costa Rica. Organized donation drive to collect Spanish-English dictionaries and Band-Aids for the Intercultural Center. Participated in construction and renovation of community bathroom and painted mural for future computer classroom.

Holiday Volunteer, Almost Home Kids Medical Care Facility, 2013-present. Every December I coordinate a group of our daughters’ high school friends to dress up like elves, read holiday stories and sing to children with complicated healthcare needs who require respite care at this facility.

Holiday Volunteer, St. Patrick’s Residence Nursing and Rehabilitation Home, 2013-present. Every December I work with a group of our daughters’ high school friends to dress up like elves, distribute candy canes and sing to the elderly residents at this facility.

Feed My Starving Children, Volunteer, 2013-present. Worked with neighbors and family members to pack meals for malnourished children in a variety of areas including Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, Caribbean, North and Central America and South America.

Naperville Junior Woman’s Club, 2012-2013. Serve, share and volunteer to improve the quality of life in the Naperville community and surrounding areas through philanthropic donations and fundraisers.

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 2012-present. Prepare and deliver meals to local members and their families once a month.

AFS International Host Family, 2011-2012. Hosted Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX) exchange student from Riesa, Germany for one year in our home. This fellowship is funded by the German Bundestag and U.S. Congress, providing American and German young adults the opportunity to spend one year in each other’s country, studying, interning and living with hosts in a cultural immersion program.

VacSee/Paris Program, 2010. Hosted exchange student from France for two weeks in our home.

American Cancer Society (ACS), 2007. Raised $1,000 in donations for ACS as a sponsored runner in the Chicago Marathon.

Hesed House, 2006-present. Homeless shelter volunteer duties include preparing and serving dinner, opening lockers for guests, registering guest bed assignments, passing out toiletries in the volunteer store and distributing mail.

DuPage Pads Volunteer, 2000-present. Worked with members in the DuPage County to provide interim and permanent housing support services for individuals working toward becoming self-sufficient. Donated food items to pantry, served lunch and cleaned kitchen.

Saints Peter and Paul Emergency Meals Committee, 1999-present. Provide dinners for families or individuals who have illness, unemployment, death in the family or specific needs as requested.

Rainbows for All Children, 1991-present. Support bereaved children encountering death or divorce in their family.
