Field Studies courses include some of the most interesting classes you can take for college credit. They range from extended travel-study tours with international destinations to outdoor and wilderness adventures in remote locations.

As our faculty are highly qualified, course safety is our highest priority, followed closely by good teaching. Beginners are welcome on most Field Studies courses, although some preparation is necessary for your safety and fullfillment.

Important information on international travel

Overseas destinations may require passports, visas or immunizations. Usually, transportation and lodging arrangements are included with the course; however, incidentals are not. Check with the trip leader or the Field Studies Center for specific information.

Outdoor and wilderness courses will have specific equipment and preparation requirements depending on the activity. For the outdoor weekend adventures, group camping equipment is usually provided: tents, cooking utensils, camp stoves, canoes, paddles, ropes, helmets, carabiners, etc. Students must provide their own personal items and food for most camping trips. Often, some specialized equipment is available from the Field Studies office or may be included as part of the course.

Certain outdoor activities may be physically challenging or strenuous for some. An extended wilderness backpack trip may require a pre-trip conditioning routine prior to departure. A sea kayaking trip requires familiarity with paddling techniques. More detailed information is available from the trip leader or the Field Studies office.
