CAREER
OPPORTUNITIES
The demand for psychologists is growing
in both public and private sectors, according to the Occupational Outlook
Handbook of the U.S. Department of Labor.
Psychologists are employed in many different settings, including business,
marketing, nursing, human services, industry, hospitals, clinics, social
service agencies, research, educational institutions, government agencies
and private practice. This diversity of applications attracts people with
a wide variety of training and talents; those especially useful include
good interpersonal skills, strong liberal arts background, and strong
mathematics and science ability.
Some career opportunities are limited to individuals with graduate degrees. However,
many opportunities are available for people with a bachelor's degree. Jobs commonly
available to those with a bachelor's degree include management trainees, high
school teachers, rehabilitation counselors, child care workers, probation officers,
psychiatric aides, research assistants, human resources employees and youth counselors.
The College of DuPage Psychology program is a popular program that offers students
the opportunity to explore a variety of psychology courses. These include lower
division courses leading to a bachelor's degree in Psychology, personal growth
courses, and courses that are an integral component of occupational and pre-professional
programs.
Interested students are encouraged to meet with an adviser listed in this program
guide.
Other sources of information include the Library College and Career Information
Center and the American Psychological Association.
Seek faculty advising as early as possible to ensure a solid, balanced psychology
background. |

IAI TRANSFER RECOMMENDATIONS
The Psychology Majors Panel of the Illinois Articulation Initiative
(IAI) strongly encourages community college students to complete an
Associate in Arts degree prior to transfer. In addition to the IAI General
Education Core Curriculum, a maximum of three courses beyond General
Psychology are guaranteed for transfer by the Baccalaureate Majors agreement
under the following conditions: If the receiving institution offers
the course as a lower diversion course, then course-for-course transfer
is guaranteed; or if the receiving institution does not offer the course,
or does not offer the course at the lower level, the student will receive
elective, lower division, psychology credit for the course.
The
Information Sheet contains a list of Psychology courses currently
offered at College of DuPage. Those designated "IAI" are among
those listed under the agreement for guaranteed transfer. Courses not
so designated may still transfer with decisions being made on a school-by-school
basis. Academic advisers are knowledgeable of specific transfer requirements
at various colleges and universities, and students should regularly consult
with their advisers throughout their academic careers. The IAI transfer
web site is also a good source of information and can be reached at: www.itransfer.org.
