Teacher Preparation

For Elementary and Secondary Education

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The Teacher Preparation program at College of DuPage meets the needs of students planning to teach in elementary, secondary or special education settings. Education courses also are good background for careers in youth counseling, criminal justice, and PTA leadership or to better understand one's own children's schooling experience.

Teaching opportunities exist in public and private schools at all levels and in all subjects. More jobs are available in some geographic areas, such as in inner city schools, and in some fields, such as science, computers or special education. Contact an education adviser at College of DuPage to discuss projected needs for teachers.

Students who successfully complete an Associate in Arts or an Associate in Science degree at College of DuPage transfer to a state-approved teacher education program in which they complete the education requirements for Illinois teacher certification. Specialized methods courses and upper division courses must be taken at the transfer school. It is important to check with your C.O.D. program adviser and communicate with your transfer institution to confirm program requirements.

If you have a bachelor's degree in a field other than education and seek a teaching certificate, you will be taking general education courses identified by a baccalaureate-granting institution of your choice. You may be able to take some of these courses at C.O.D. Application for an Illinois teaching certificate is begun upon completion of an approved teacher education program at a baccalaureate-granting institution.
