Information for the Biological Sciences
College of DuPage offers a broad selection of courses in the Biological
Sciences to science majors and interested students. Consult the College
Catalog for descriptions of these courses.
Be aware
that baccalaureate-granting institutions may require a laboratory component
to biology coursework, and they may not recognize particular special
topics courses (designated as 188/288 courses) as meeting science requirements
or even as satisfying elective credit. Please feel free to consult any
of the professors listed below for advice on course selection.
For the
ultimate recommendation concerning course selection, seek advice from
the four-year school where you plan to eventually transfer. Consult
the Illinois Articulation
Initiative Majors for information on how College of DuPage
courses transfer.
Students
intending to major in the biological sciences are recommended to complete
the Biology 101-103 sequence and then should consider taking an additional
10 to 15 credits worth of biological science courses. Professional programs
at four-year schools typically expect applicants to go beyond minimum
requirements to show stamina in science courses. Second-year course
selection according to major is suggested below. Majors should consider
taking Physics 151-153, Chemistry 151-153, and possibly Chemistry 251-253.
One or two years of foreign language at the college level (double this
requirement for years at the high school level) may be required for
some majors/schools.
Non-majors might consider taking Biology 100, 110, 120; Botany 110;
and Zoology 120 in addition to the listings below. Many non-majors take
Biology 101-103 and also a course listed below. The taking of both Biology
100 and 101 may not meet the equivalent of 10 hours of science credit
involving laboratory work at the four-year institution.
