Ornamental Horticulture

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Horticulture offers many different career opportunities, including landscape design, installation and maintenance, floral design, greenhouse, nursery or garden center management, and turf maintenance. Because of this diversity, the horticulture job market is excellent and is expected to remain good well into the future. Horticulture offers rewarding careers for individuals who enjoy working with people and plants, and who find satisfaction in enhancing our environment.

Many opportunities are available for people with an associate in applied science degree, although a few jobs are limited to individuals with a bachelor's degree or graduate training.

The Horticulture program at College of DuPage meets the needs of students entering the horticulture industry as well as those presently employed who wish to continue their professional growth. The program emphasizes the business and management proficiency necessary to compete successfully in the horticulture industry.

Horticulture program graduates may be employed as landscape or floral designers, managers of nurseries or garden centers, greenhouse growers, landscape crew foremen, or park district or golf course employees. People with a strong business aptitude can be successful owning and operating their own horticultural enterprise.

Some jobs in horticulture require physical strength and working outdoors in all kinds of weather. Some positions may be seasonal. Good written and verbal communication skills and basic mathematics skills are essential.
