A dental
hygienist is a licensed, preventive health care professional who provides
an array of dental professional services. The dental hygienist furnishes
educational, clinical and therapeutic services and promotes total health
through the maintenance of optimal oral health.
Dental
hygienists are employed in many different clinical and professional
settings:
Private practice settings (general practice, periodontal practice,
pediatric practice, veterinary dental practice/hospital)
Hospital and long-term care facilities
Public health departments
Schools
Educators (dental hygiene programs, dental assisting programs
and dental schools)
Business and/or industry (sales representatives, new product
development and/or research, marketing and advertising, consulting)
Correctional facilities
Health maintenance organizations
Coursework includes classroom, lab and on-campus clinical instruction.
Several off-site clinical opportunities are offered as well. Successful
completion of the program results in an Associate in Applied Science
(A.A.S.) degree. Successful completion of the program also permits the
student to sit for the national board examination and the state licensing
examination.
Accreditation
The Dental Hygiene program has been approved by the Illinois Community
College Board and has received Accreditation status from the American
Dental Association.
