Medical Transcription

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Medical transcriptionists are medical language specialists who are employed in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, medical services, doctors' offices, other health care settings, and even out of their homes after gaining experience. The Medical Transcription program prepares students for entry-level positions in these settings, typing histories and physicals, operative reports, consultations, discharge summaries and radiology reports from physician dictations.

Since the medical transcription field encompasses a wide variety of settings, the demand for medical transcriptionists will continue for many years. The student may consider becoming a Certified Medical Transcriptionist after being employed for several years in a hospital or clinic setting.

Medical transcription students take courses in English, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, and word processing. In addition, a transcriptionist must have above-average typing and spelling skills and the ability to work with mechanical transcribing equipment.
