Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration program prepares graduates to enter the vast and continuously expanding field of environmental control. Establishing an environment for personal comfort, preserving foods, modifying air for industrial processes, and controlling and modifying the environment are some of the employment opportunities for qualified technicians.

Students study the theory of refrigeration, air conditioning and heating; electrical circuits, components, controls, accessories and designs; energy audits and testing; servicing; troubleshooting; and installation of environmental control units.

Graduates of this program can embark on careers with manufacturers, governments, contractors, utilities, wholesalers, building engineers, and personally owned businesses. The field is one of the top 30 growth occupations in the United States. Employment possibilities include the related fields of air conditioning/heating sales, wholesaling and energy management.

Students may earn an Associate in Science degree after taking 18 to 20 hours of General Education classes, such as math, English and history, along with 41 hours of required air conditioning and refrigeration classes. Full-time students can complete a degree in approximately two years. On completion, with prior planning, students may continue their education at a baccalaureate-granting institution, entering at the junior level. Baccalaureate degrees include mechanical or electrical engineering and vocational technology education.

Students can complete the certificate program in one year. However, additional courses are highly recommended, and it may take longer than a year to complete those.
