CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
A wide variety of careers are available in the printing and publishing industry: desktop prepress, such as page composition, electronic illustration, scanning, and color correction using QuarkXPress, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator; press operation using offset duplicators up to a Heidelberg GTO press; color scanning and color correction, imagesetter output and proofing; and Web-based online publishing production as an addition to print production.

The graphic arts industry is a major employer in Illinois, and there are significant opportunities for employment nationally.

According to Printing Industries Illinois/Indiana, printing is the third largest manufacturing sector in Illinois, contributing more than $9.1 billion (more than the NFL, NBA and NHL combined) to the state's economy in 2002. Illinois printing companies alone employ more than 84,000 workers, and this does not even include the numerous advertising agencies, universities, major corporations and firms with in-house print shops.

Because of the strong curriculum and up-to-date computer labs and graphic arts equipment, local employers hire current students and graduates of the Graphic Arts Technology program.

Students who complete an Associate in Applied Science degree are immediately employable or can transfer to universities that have articulation agreements with our program.

Those with job experience or other academic degrees can gain the knowledge and skills to adapt to a high-tech graphic production environment by pursuing courses leading to a certificate.
