Emergency Medical Technician and Paramedic

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Training for emergency care personnel provided by the Fire Science Technology program at College of DuPage is offered in two classifications: Emergency Medical Technician–Basic (EMT-B) and Paramedic (EMT–P).

EMTs are trained in basic emergency skills, rescue techniques and the handling of hazardous materials. Paramedics receive additional training in advanced life support techniques: administering medications, starting intravenous infusions and providing advanced cardiac care.

The Emergency Medical Technician program uses the Basic National Standard curriculum adopted by the Illinois Department of Public Health. The curriculum has an assessment-based approach rather than a diagnostic-based approach.

The hospital-based Paramedic program uses the National Standard Curriculum as required by the Illinois Department of Public Health. College of DuPage works with Good Samaritan Hospital, Edward Hospital and Central DuPage Hospital, which are designated by the state of Illinois as training sites for paramedic personnel. The college also offers a paramedic transition course for EMTs and training for EMT instructors.

EMTs and paramedics work for fire departments, ambulance services and hospital emergency units. Employment prospects in this field are difficult to assess because many EMTs are volunteers.
