Day of Action and Ice Cream Social 2014

College of DuPage responded to the needs of our community and made a difference at the first COD CARES Day of Action Ice Cream Social Tuesday, April 29, 2014.  An estimated 2500 people from across the campus came together in the name of service and proved just how much COD cares. 

More than 500 COD Action Heroes registered during the event that featured donation stations to benefit community organizations; activity tables that gave everyone a chance to help; and information on upcoming group service opportunities.

Items Collected

  • More than 500 pounds of non-perishable food items for West Suburban Community Pantry
  • 1000s of plastic grocery bags for Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post #5917
  • 100s of assorted items for Goodwill Industries
  • More than 30 cell phones, hearing aids, and eyeglasses for Lions Club International
  • 26 formal dresses and accessories for The Glass Slipper Project
  • Crayons for Endowment for Future Generations Student Club
  • Several computers, monitors and laptops for People's Resource Center
  • Animal supplies for Willowbrook Wildlife Center
  • A variety of baby supplies for DuPage PADS
  • Batteries, electronics, and books for Learning By Doing Sustainability Project (BIO 1110 class)
  • Various household cleaning supplies for Family Shelter Service
     

Activities

  • Assembled 300 activity packs for children at Central DuPage Hospital
  • Using the 1000s of donated plastic bags, the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post #5917 crocheted mats for homeless veterans
  • Stuffed 300 school backpacks for underprivileged children in DuPage County to be distributed by DuCAP (DuPage County Area Project)
  • Wrote over 150 Thank You notes to veterans for Operation Support Our Troops
