Action Hero: Lynne Grezek

How do you spot a COD Action Hero? Don't look for a red cape or fists of iron.

Just find the person with the huge smile and knowing twinkle in her eye.

Lynne Grezek, Action Hero, learned the joy of service through her parents, who were consummate volunteers.

"I was raised in an environment where my mom and dad did a lot of community work through the Mt. Greenwood Lions Club," Lynne said. "It is something so natural. It feels so good to help other people."

As the administrative assistant in College of DuPage's Dental Hygiene program, Lynne's natural aptitude for giving is conveyed daily to the students she assists and the community members she welcomes to the Dental Hygiene Clinic. But she still has plenty of energy in reserve for her charitable work. As an associate member of the DuPage Marine Corps League Detachment 399, Lynne coordinates the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Christmas collection on campus, runs the prize table for the monthly bingo game at Hines VA Hospital, works the DuPage County Marine roasted corn booth at both the Downers Grove Heritage Fest and the DuPage County Fair, volunteers with Operation Welcome You Home, and helps pack boxes for troops with Operations Support Our Troops America.

In between, she serves on the COD Cares advisory committee and is the epitome of a COD Action Hero.

"At the end of the day, I might be tired, but it is a good tired," Lynne said. "I like to keep a positive attitude. A negative attitude just robs you of your energy."

Lynne gains energy and her positive outlook from the people she helps.

"I see how fortunate I am to be here and I am thankful to the veterans for their sacrifices. It is so gratifying to serve them."

Lynne describes service activities as fun with a purpose. She believes volunteering is fun, and the more fun you have, the more people want to get involved, which is how she sees COD Cares.

"People feel good when they are able to give back, to share their time and their skills with others," said Lynne, who advises anyone thinking about joining COD Cares to just jump in and become an Action Hero. "COD Cares gives all of us that opportunity to share. I don't think people realize what they have to offer and what a difference they can make for those in need."
