Description of Organization
Ten Thousand Villages provides vital, fair income to people in developing countries by selling their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America. Ten Thousand Villages works with artisans who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed. This income helps pay for food, education, health care and housing.
Description of Service Learner Role:
The service learner will work with other volunteers and staff while learning and telling artisan stories to customers in our retail shop. Duties can include sales, display, unpacking orders, and possibly staffing off-site sales nearby. Volunteers receive a 10% discount on purchases made in the store.
Ten Thousand Villages requests volunteers who have a friendly disposition, interest in learning about fair trade and artisans from developing countries. We sell handmade gift items which help artisans raise themselves out of poverty in developing countries. A 30 minute orientation in the store is the first step toward becoming a Then Thousand Villages Volunteer. Regular orientations are the first Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. Additional orientations for service learning students will be held at the start of each COD session or by appointment.
