Description of Organization:
Sustain DuPage is a 501(c)3 nonprofit serving DuPage County.
Mission: To empower DuPagers with sustainable living skills and to enact sustainable policy reform.
Vision: A socially, economically, environmentally sustainable DuPage County.
Description of Service Learner Role:
Our volunteers meet at Churchill Woods Forest Preserve to restore the ecology of this 264 acre site! Restoration sometimes includes heavy labor like cutting brush, but we also have non-heavy days that include harvesting and spreading seed, river restoration, and more! We welcome volunteers of all ages, we ask that guardians supervise kiddos (with a 1:3 ratio of adults to kids!)
EC3:Sustain DuPage has brought together the Environmental Commissions & Committees of DuPage County to unify as Illinois' first Environmental Commission & Committee Coalition. These county-wide volunteers have joined the Coalition to collaborate with other member Environmental Commissions & Committees of DuPage County in order to pool our resources, inspiration, and expertise as well as to comprehensively further our individual Commission & Committee goals. Our meetings are open to the public!
LIFE Atlas:This group of volunteers is working to create a website that inventories the Locally Integrated Food Economy of DuPage County in a fun and exciting way. The finished website will serve as a tool to DuPagers who would like to buy local (but don't know how!), DuPagers who would like to grow more of their own food (but don't know how!), and small-business entrepreneurs who know they want to open or strengthen a food establishment business (but don't know how!)
Victory Garden:Through the Victory Garden we are empowering our community with agricultural and nutritional literacy! That means we provide in-garden one-on-one mentorship in how to grow food. Once we've grown the food we harvest it and cook it together to strengthen the bonds of community and receive communal cooking lessons!
Our organization also teaches classes in sustainable living skills like basket weaving, tapping maple trees for syrup, sewing, etc.! Please feel free to contact us with your questions!
