Description of Organization:
Re:new is a nonprofit social enterprise that provides free vocational training, then employment to refugee women resettled in DuPage County, Illinois. Using upcycled textiles, our volunteers, staff, and Artisans collaborate to create beautiful handcrafted items that we sell in our store, online ecommerce site and to retail partners. By contributing to the local economy and providing a space for building positive relationships, we create a place for refugee women to thrive.
Description of Service Learner Role:
All Service Learner students will serve as Production Assistants and will be trained in the following ways:
- Working alongside the Artisan team to cut and iron projects for the women to sew
- Sorting incoming textiles and/or returning textiles back into the Design Center for
future design use.
Volunteer application and 1 hour onsite orientation
Number of Placements Available:
4 - 6 placements available per semester.
We are a multicultural work environment serving refugee women from a variety of cultural and religious backgrounds. Showing respect for their varied traditions around gender roles and expectations, we offer onsite volunteer placement opportunities to women only. (We offer onsite internship opportunities to women and primarily offsite internship opportunities to men, both occurring in the Fall and Spring semesters.)
