Description of Organization:
Kindred Hospice provides compassionate care for people facing a life-limiting illness, as well as for their loved ones. Volunteers with Kindred are an important part of a larger team who recognize that medical/clinical care for patients in the last stages of life, along with psychological, spiritual, and social services for patients and families can contribute to improved life quality.
Description of Service Learner Role:
Volunteers may serve a variety of roles with Kindred Hospice. Perhaps the most dramatic impact on quality of life a volunteer can provide for a patient is through the immediate, hands-on experience of Patient Support Volunteering. After completing a thorough orientation, Patient Support Volunteers may provide companionship, conversation, leisure activities or a quiet, caring presence. You may also use your education and/or area of expertise to aid our patients and program. Your focus can include art, horticultural, music, pet therapy; and life review/legacy techniques such as recording oral histories, storytelling or scrap booking.
Patient Support Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Gentiva Hospice, along with Medicare, requires that potential volunteers complete a background check, physical, and 2-stage TB test. Volunteers are asked to visit their patient(s) weekly, for at least one semester. We serve patients and families all over Chicago and suburbs. In the interest of time reduction and transport savings, we try to place volunteers close to their home, school or place of work.
Interested students must read the Hospice Training Binder and take a quiz at the end prior to coming on board. It is our goal to ensure that volunteers are properly trained and educated before going out in the field. Because of the requirements it is imperative that any interested volunteer contact Cynthia Selling early to ensure the service learning hours will be completed on time.
