Description of Organization:

DHS helps Illinois families achieve self-sufficiency, independence and health to the maximum extent possible. DHS improves the quality of life of thousands of Illinois families by providing an array of comprehensive, coordinated services through: community health and prevention programs; programs for persons with developmental disabilities, mental illness, or substance abuse problems; employment, training, and independent living programs for persons with disabilities; and financial support, employment and training programs, and child care, and other family services for low-income families.

Description of Service Learner Role:

Many opportunities are available. Please read the following descriptions:

Fashion Consultant: Inform Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Job Club participants of the proper career attire. Provide uni-sex presentations on business attire, teaching how to dress for success in the work place.

Greeter: Assist Illinois Department of Human Services employees with providing quality customer service to customers who are seeking food stamp and/or medical benefits. Greet customers as they enter the facility and direct them to the appropriate sign-in desk. Assist customers with correspondences from IDHS.

Lecturer: Inform Illinois Department of Human Services customers of educational and job opportunities. To provide literature and other pertinent information that can lead customers toward their maximum level of self-sufficiency. Service learners will give presentations geared toward education and employment.

Marketing Manager: Service learners are needed to solicit donations such as children's books, clothes, nutritional snacks for children, school supplies, furniture, toiletries, etc, for customers and their families. Recruit volunteers. Design brochures, flyers or other written materials to promote the volunteer service program at the facility.

Office Aide: Assist local office staff with customers in order to provide timely and courteous customer service. Duties will vary, depending on the urgent needs of the day. Duties will include, but not limited to, voice mail retrieval, shredding confidential documents, assisting managers with transporting cases, filing and copying forms.

Organization Requirements:

Orientation and training will be provided by the Assistant Local Office Administrator and/or designee.

A background check is required. It can take up to two weeks for the background check results. Your Service Learning Contract will not be signed until the results of your background check are received.
