Service learning links community service with academic study. This type
of learning follows the theory of “informal education” outlined
by John Dewey, one of the most influential contributors in the development
of educational thinking in the 20th century. According to Dewey, “The
interaction of knowledge and skills with experience is the key to learning.”
In other words, students learn best not by reading Great Books in a
closed room but by opening the doors and windows of experience.
