Research Paper

Choose one of these four assignments:

1) Locate and study multiple versions of any fairy tale other than “Cinderella.”  Having read the versions, identify—and write your paper on—what you feel are the defining elements that make the tales variants of a single story.  If you wish, you may argue that one version is preferable to others.

2) Georgy Girl (1966) is merely one example of “Cinderella” on film.  Others include Midnight (1939)*, Now, Voyager (1942)*, Tammy and the Bachelor (1957)*, Cinderfella (1960),The Slipper and the Rose (1976)*, Working Girl (1988)*, Pretty Woman (1990)*, Ever After (1998)*, Maid in Manhattan (2002), and I Capture the Castle (2003).  View two more versions from different time periods.  How do the films alter the original story?  How do they reflect the times in which they were produced?  What elements of the Cinderella story are found in all the versions? What about these elements makes them relevant regardless of the time of production?

3) Research the Nuremberg war crimes tribunals following World War II. Drawing specifically on the statements of those who testified at Nuremberg, as well as those who have written about it, show how Milgram's experiments do help explain the Holocaust and other Nazi crimes.

4) The Stanford Prison Experiment was recently revisited by the German film Das Experiment (The Experiment)*.  (An American film about the subject has been announced, but it’s not due for release until 2004.) View The Experiment and discuss how it portrays the Zimbardo experiment.  What fictionalized elements does it add to the experiment?  What is the effect of these fictional elements?  What is the theme of the movie?  Does this theme coincide with the conclusions that Zimbardo draws?  What have critics said about the connection between the experiment and the film and the changes the film makes?  Do you agree with them?

Regardless of which topic you choose:

1)   Your paper should be focused around a strong thesis statement.

2)   Your paper should be 1500-1750 words.

3)   You need to cite at least five outside sources.  You need to use these sources in some way in your paper; you can’t just put them in your works cited page.  You can quote, paraphrase, or take information from the source, but you must use it.  Only one of these sources can have originated on the web.  One of the five sources must be scholarly.

4)   You need to use proper MLA citations and have a works cited page.
