Composition 3
Course Description:

English 103 is the third in the three-course composition sequence.  The goals of this course are to aid students in learning a variety of research methods and in learning how to incorporate various sources into an extended, thesis-driven research paper.  Additionally, students are required to read a literary text and write an interpretive essay on it, incorporating outside research.

Readings:

Shakespeare.  Play to be selected by you.

Maimon and Peritz, The Writer’s Resource

Other handouts and online readings as assigned.

Course Requirements:
50% Research Paper, Research Paper Drafts

20% Annotated Bibliography

10% Online Database Tutorial

10% Web Evaluation Tutorial

5% Presentation

5% Class Participation

Research Paper:  Your final research paper should be 11-13 pages long (double-spaced, one inch margins, no more than 12pt font) and incorporate at least ten sources, which must include some scholarly sources (journals and scholarly books).

Research Paper Draft:  You must turn the draft; failure to turn in the draft will result in your final grade for your research paper being lowered one half grade.  The draft will not be graded.  Expect to share your draft with your classmates.

Annotated Bibliography:  The week before your research paper is due you will be required to turn in an annotated bibliography of at least thirty sources.  (You will not be required to use all of these in your final draft.)

Online Database Tutorial and Web Evaluation Tutorial:  These exercises will help you learn research skills and help you research the topic for your final paper.

Presentation:  In the final week, you will present your research paper to the class.

Class Participation:  This portion of your grade will be determined by your participation in class discussions and activities and your attendance.

Deadlines:

All assignments are due in class on the date listed.  Late papers will be marked down one letter grade for each day (not class day) late. No assignments will be accepted more than a week late.   Exceptions, at the discretion of the instructor, will be made for documented emergencies. You must turn in your research paper in order to pass this course.

Attendance:

Since this class meets only once a week, I expect you to attend every class session.  You will be allowed one absence.  For each missed session after that, your grade for the course will be lowered by a half letter.  No kidding.  Use your absence wisely.

Academic Integrity:

The goal of this course is to improve your writing.  Thus, you will only benefit from the course if you turn in your own work.  Turning in someone else’s work as your own is a violation of COD’s plagiarism policy and will result in failure of this course.  We will discuss how to incorporate source materials into your paper and document them during this course.  Should you have a question regarding using sources, I encourage you to visit the writing center and/or see me.

Extra Credit:

I do not regularly allow students opportunities to use extra credit to make up for missed class sessions or assignments or for poor performance on regular assignments.  By completing the regular class assignments to the best of your ability, you should have no problem getting the grade you want.

Withdrawal:

I will give my permission to withdraw throughout the quarter for any reason.  If you don’t think you can complete the class, I would hope you would drop within the first few weeks, so you don’t waste my time and your money.  If you remain in the class until after the last day for automatic withdrawal, I would hope you would have the fortitude to complete the class.
