The Head Hunters

Mike Fern

Listen at them drums

Listen at them drums

[Native chanting]

Well, I had a fight with my baby

She just didn’t understand

So I left that old homestead

Set sail for a foreign land

The boat capsized in a stormy sea

I said, “Man, oh, man, here’s the end of me.”

Listen at them drums

Yeah, listen at them drums

I just knew that I was a goner

But then in my final prayer

I was cast over high and dry

On an island from nowhere
The sand was cool, kinda soft and nice

I said, “Bless my soul.  I’m in paradise.”

Listen at them drums

Listen at them drums

Then an arrow went by noggin

I flipped over quick to see

Native cats with bows and spears

That arrow was meant for me

In perfect English, the leader said,

“Pardon me, chap, I must have your head”

“Head hunter, please leave me alone”

I said “Head hunter, please leave me along”

I hear baby calling and I’ve got to go home

Listen at them drums

Listen at them drums

Well, he tied me up to a palm tree

And he started to dance around

To the beat of conga drum

Well, a welcome familiar sound

Instead then I lost all self control

When I saw the head hunters do the rock ‘n’ roll

Listen at them drums

Listen at them drums

Well, I tore myself from the palm tree

I gave out with a wailing song

Them natives got all shook up

‘Cause I soon had them rocking along

The leader clapped his hands and said,

“Well, we dig you the most; you can keep your head.”

“Head hunters, please leave me alone”

I said “Head hunters, please me alone”

‘Cause my baby needs me

And I’m on my way home

I’m on my way home

I’m on my way home

I’m on my way home

I’m on my way home
