Before
"Alley Oop," a song based on a popular comic strip of the
same name, there was no group called the Hollywood Argyles.
Vocalist Gary Paxton, who had gained success as one half of the duo
Skip and Flip, recorded "Alley Oop" for Lute Records while
he was under contract to Brent Records for Skip and Flip, so he took
the location of the recording studio--the corner of Hollywood
Boulevard and Argyle Avenue--as the name under which to issue the
single. Actually, the artists on the record are Paxton, his
girlfriend, some friends, and noted drummer Sandy Nelson. That
the gang was under the influence of "hard cider" might
account for the distinctive slurred style of the lyrics.
Songs about cavemen, though related to monsters, tend toward comedy rather than horror, and "Alley Oop" is no exception. Paxton returned with the Hollywood Argyles for a more classic horror song with "The Bug-Eyed Man." But his most famous foray into the genre was as producer for the Halloween classic "Monster Mash," by Bobby "Boris" Pickett. |
