Niles a First Team All-American
By Ken Reed
Tim Niles, a five-foot, nine-inch guard on the College of DuPage men's
basketball team, has been named a first team All-American by the National
Junior College Athletic Association.
In addition, Niles, who has been invited to play in the NJCAA Basketball
Coaches Association All-Star game in Phoenix on April 20, has also agreed
to a full scholarship to play basketball for Emporia State University
(Kan.), a Division II program.
Niles this year led the Chaparrals in scoring by averaging 16.6 points
per game, as well as four assists and two steals per contest. He also
averaged 3.4 rebounds per game this season.
During his two-year career at DuPage, Niles scored 1,039 points, placing
him fourth overall in team history. Jim Belanger, a 6'7" center,
who played from 1969 to 1971, is the all-time points leader with 1,307
during his career.
Niles also finished second to Belanger in free throws made for a career.
Niles sank 333 free throws, just two behind Belanger, who hit 335.
In addition, Niles averaged 80 percent at the charity stripe, placing
him in the top 10 among all-time Chaparrals leaders.
Niles last year was named a second team All-American.
"He had a great two-year career here," said Chaps coach Don
Klaas. "For a player who is only 5'9", he has great quickness
and explosion. He'll be a great player for Emporia State."

Chap Women Third in NJCAA
Tourney
By Ken Reed
Competing with only six players, the College of DuPage women's basketball
team downed Brookdale Community College (N.J.) in a close contest, 67-64,
to place third in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division
III tournament on Saturday, March 15, in Utica, N.Y.
The Chaparrals trailed 35-33 at the half, but rallied to outscore the
Jersey Blues 34-30 to capture third place honors for first-year Chap
coach, Cris Cotton. The game featured 12 lead changes.
Bonnie Nge (Westmont) tallied 23 points to lead the Chap charge. She
was backed by 16 points from Shanara Jones (Naperville) and 15 points
from Amanda Smith (Villa Park).
Earlier, the Chaparrals defeated Montgomery-Rockville College (Md.)
71-68 in the opening game, but were then beaten by Mohawk Valley Community
College (N.Y.) 59-43.
Jones was named to the NJCAA All-tournament Team.
"This third-place finish is a testament to my players," Cotton
said. "They played smart and they played hard."
Cotton noted that many spectators were pulling for the Chaparrals, partly
because the Chaps, due to injuries, were competing with six players.
Monroe College (N.Y.) was the tourney champion, followed by Mohawk Valley.
