Chap Gridders 30th in
National Poll
By Ken Reed
The College of DuPage football Chaparrals are ranked 30th in a national
pre-season poll by JCGridiron, a popular web site that features community
college football.
Led by coach Fred Fimbres, the Chaparrals last year fashioned a 6-4
mark overall and a 5-3 record in the rugged Midwest Football Conference.
Fimbres is optimistic about the chances of his Chaparrals this season
- and with good reason. DuPage features three defensive tackles and
five linebackers who Fimbres says are all capable of playing Division
I football.
The three defensive tackles are Brian Thomas, Darius Scott and Zach
Pridham. The five linebackers are John Ryan (Wheaton), Tim Cummins (Lemont),
Justin Hickman, Travis Saville (West Chicago) and Alex Springhorn.
"We think we will be able to bring our defense in waves,"
Fimbres said. "We are very deep at linebacker and are lucky to
have three tackles capable of playing Division I."
Leading Fimbres' offense will be quarterback Jon Daniels, who last year
backed up all conference performer Tom Specia. "Jon is an outstanding
athlete," Fimbres said. "His strong suit is his accuracy and
arm strength. He is more talented than Tom."
Fimbres will need every bit of that talent as the Chaps again tackle
a tough season schedule. DuPage will open play at Rock Valley College
on Saturday, Aug. 30. After hosting Joliet Junior College on Saturday,
Sept. 6, the Chaps will travel to Grand Rapids Community College to
take on the always-tough Raiders on Saturday, Sept. 13. Arch-rival Harper
College is the opponent in Glen Ellyn on Saturday, Sept. 20, followed
by a non-conference tilt against Erie Community College, Buffalo, New
York, on Saturday, Sept. 27.
The Chaps will play at Iowa Central College, on Saturday, Oct. 4; North
Dakota State College of Science, in Glen Ellyn, Saturday, Oct. 11; at
North Iowa Area Community College, Saturday, Oct. 18; and Ellsworth
Community College, Iowa, in Glen Ellyn, on Saturday, Oct. 25.
Conference playoffs are set for two Saturdays, Nov. 1 and 8. The playoff
winners will compete in the Graphic Edge Printing Bowl in Cedar Falls,
Iowa, on Sunday, Nov. 23.

Chap Athletics Wins Fifth
Consecutive National Award
By Ken Reed
For an unprecedented fifth consecutive year, the College of DuPage Athletic
department has won the prestigious National Alliance of Two-Year College
Athletic Administrators Award (NATYCAA).
Led by Athletic Director Paul Zakowski, the department captured the
national honor on the strength of several top finishes by DuPage teams
in National Junior College Athletic Association competition.
For the second year in a row, the DuPage women's tennis team won the
NJCAA meet, while the men's cross country team and men's outdoor track
teams finished second in national competition. The women's basketball
team and men's tennis team placed third nationally; the women's softball
team was fourth; and the women's track team, eighth.
Points for the NATYCAA award are calculated based on each college's
NJCAA finish. For example, each first place finish is worth 20 points;
second place, 19; third, 18, etc.
C.O.D. collected 148.5 points with the women's teams contributing 83
points and the men, 65.5.
Herkimer County Community College, New York, finished second with 143
points; Gloucester County College, New Jersey, third, 140; Mohawk Valley
Community College, New York, fourth, 134.5; and Erie Community College,
New York, fifth, 129.
Ninety-six community colleges compete in non-scholarship, Division III
for the NATYCAA award, which is designed to recognize and reward overall
program excellence at the two-year college level as well as promote
all programs in all sports on an equal basis.
LuAnn Zimmick, C.O.D. assistant athletic director, accepted the college's
first-place award during ceremonies in Dallas, Texas, on June 8 and
