Gahlberg Gallery Art Exhibit — Ohio. Ohio, the state, has a turbulent history relating to American politics and tragedy. In that regard, it is a colorful representative of this nation. The artists in the exhibition don’t illustrate the narrative history of Ohio. Their work is rooted in the multifaceted politic of a nation as it evolves into the 21st century. Artists include Sam Durant, Rodney McMillan, Andrea Bowers, David Hullfish Baily, Robert Pruitt, Adrian Piper, Olga Koumondouros and Philip Maysles. Curated by Brad Killam. At the McAninch Arts Center — Ralph’s World. Disney artist and Chicago rocker Ralph Covert has created a musical world where little guys and gals can rock, sing songs and dance with their big people friends. The New York Times described Covert’s kid-centric music as “artful” and “infectious” and that “the vision of children bopping, playing instruments (or pretend instruments) and plain ‘letting go’ captures the life force of garage-band rock without the anger or bad vibes.” Stir your imagination and bop until you drop. Gahlberg Gallery Art Exhibit — Celebrity and the Peculiar – Industry of the Ordinary. Industry of the Ordinary is a collective made up of Chicago artists Adam Brooks and Mathew Wilson. Through photography, video, sound, performance and other means, Industry of the Ordinary is planning a site-specific multimedia event that will chart the intersections of “ordinary” people’s lives in relation to the subjects contained within the title of the project, Celebrity and The Peculiar. At the McAninch Arts Center — New Philharmonic/DuPage Opera Theatre presents Otello. Stage direction by Peter Amster. In Italian with English supertitles. Verdi’s Otello is often cited as the greatest Italian opera of the 19th century. Set in Cyprus after a victorious battle against the Turks, Otello, the conquering general and Moor of Venice, revels in his victory with his beautiful wife, Desdemona. But Lago’s envious machinations twist Otello into jealous rage and ultimately murder. The intrigue of this tragedy is revealed and intensified through Boito’s poetic libretto beautifully integrated by Verdi music and brought to life through the collaboration of Maestro Muspratt and Peter Amster.
