Global Flicks 2006: A Festival of International Films: The Man Without a Past (Finnish, 97 minutes, 2002). Directed by Aki Kaurismaki. A man awakens after a brutal mugging with no memory and wanders into the outskirts of Helsinki. A destitute family helps nurse him back to health and a Salvation Army worked named Irma helps him get a job. Though bureaucrats and policemen can't seem to cope with the man's lack of established identity, the amnesiac plants potatoes, manages a rock and roll band and builds a new self. At the McAninch Arts Center College Theater Stageworks: Measure for Measure by William Shakespeare. Directed by Tim Klein. Considered shocking during Shakespeare's age, this play has become a much-performed Shakespearean piece in the last 30 years because of its difficult and unresolved questioning of moral responsibility. Disguised characters, hypocrisy and the struggle of ethics are explored in this provocative piece. Gahlberg Gallery Art Exhibit Over your head and too deep? Try juxtaposition semiotics! SIMPARCH and Paul Cekan present an overview of recent discoveries of ancient icon codes that relate meaning across the ages, the cultures and the minds of alien thinkers. Like matching up pieces in picture puzzles, tricks relating counterparts of conceptual patterns are shown in this exhibit. At the McAninch Arts Center Buffalo Theatre Ensemble presents The Baltimore Waltz by Paula Vogel, directed by Amelia Barrett. Silly and poignant, a brother and sister take a whirlwind trip to Europe after learning that she has contracted the fatal illness ATD (Acquired Toilet Disease) from working as an elementary school teacher. Her flight of imagination saves her brother's spirit when she cannot save his life in this smart, funny and ultimately moving tribute to someone who is deeply loved. Set during Japan's Shogun era, this film looks at life in a samurai compound, where young warriors are trained in sword fighting. Taboo centers around a young samurai named Kano, whose smooth face and soft beauty make him an object of desire. A chance encounter at a psychiatric hospital represents a way out for both of them. If Cahit marries Sibel, she can flee her family and Cahit won't be alone anymore, mourning his dead wife and drinking his life away. At first, things go as planned, but gradually, their marriage of convenience starts to resemble the real thing - until Cahit's violent tendencies get the best of him.
