"HOW TO READ THIS TRANSFER GUIDE"
With the start of the Fall, 2005 term College of DuPage will switch from a quarter to semester system. All the transfer guides will contain both quarter and semester course articulation information to assist students and faculty advisors during this transition phase. Quarter term classes have three digit course numbers, while semester course have Bolded four digit course numbers: For example, ENGLI 101 is a quarter course and ENGLI 1101 is a semester course. In the transfer guides, articulation tables will show a number of course articulation arrangements, for example:
Speec 100, 1100 In the above case the Speech 100 course or 1100 can be used to meet a requirement. Engli 102 + 103, 1102 In above case, English 102 plus 103 or English 1102 can be used to meet the requirement. Math 115, 1115 and 116 and 117, 1116 This case describes two situations: 1.) Math 115 equals 1115 and Math 116 + 117 equals 1116 2.) Math 115 + 116 + 117 equals Math 1115 + 1116The transfer guides are a valuable tool to assist students and faculty advisors with the transfer process. Given the complex nature of the articulation process should you have any questions regarding course equivalencies contact the College Articulation Office at 630/942.2500.
Northern Illinois University is a Participant in the IAI (General Education Core Curriculum and/or the Illinois Baccalaureate Majors' Curricula).
There is transfer information covering a wide variety of topics in the "General Transfer Information" section of the Advising Handbook. The handbook is located in Counseling and Advising Services (SRC-2044) and may be useful to students.
Transfer students must have a GPA of at least C (2.00 on a 4.00 scale) for all college work completed and be in good standing for admission to NIU. Some majors (see Limited Admissions programs in 2005-06 catalog, page 21) at Northern Illinois University require a GPA above the minimum required for admission to NIU. Applicants who have attempted up to and including 12 semester hours of credit are evaluated as freshmen for admission purposes and must meet the current freshman admission requirements.
To be admitted to NIU, COD students who have earned 60 or more transferable semester hours but not an A.A. or A.S. degree must:
1. Have a GPA of at least C (2.00 on a 4.00 scale) from all colleges attended
2. Be in good academic standing at COD
College of DuPage students are advised to complete core courses (listed below) prior to enrolling at NIU.
1. Engli 101 and 102 and 103; 1101 and 1102
2. Speec 100, 1100
3. Choose from: Math 115, 1115 and 116 and 117,1116, 120,1220, 121, 1321 and 122, 1322,124,1533, 132, 1432, 134, 2134, 215, 2115, 231 and 232, 2231 (with at least a grade of "C")
Northern Illinois University has a policy which provides the same academic benefits to students who leave NIU in good standing, are on academic probation, or are on academic dismissal and reenter after earning an A.A. or A.S. degree, as given to A.A. or A.S. degree students who are new to NIU. This policy is limited to students who leave Northern Illinois University with fewer than 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of credit and who have completed no more than 80 semester hours (120 quarter hours), including NIU work and all transfer work at the time of reentry.
The policy mentioned above has commonly been referred to as the "60/80 rule." In addition to the current compact benefits (junior standing and general education satisfied) given all new students with an A.A. or A.S. degree, reentering students who meet the "60/80 rule" also start a new GPA at NIU unless the student requests otherwise.
Students who receive a "D" grade in English 1102 at College of DuPage may repeat English 1102. If the student receives a "C" grade or above after repeating the course, the higher grade is accepted and the student is not required to take the English Validation Examination at Northern Illinois University. Students who transfer with a "D" grade in English 1102 at COD are required to pass an English Validation Examination at NIU. Students will be required to pass the exam before they are allowed to register for their senior year.
NIU accepts a maximum of 99 quarter hours (66 semester hours) plus 6 quarter (4 semester hours) hours of physical education activity courses from COD.
Students must complete Northern Illinois University's general education requirements prior to graduation from NIU but not for admission. Students transferring without a degree should attempt to complete as many of NIU's general education requirements as possible while at COD.
Northern Illinois University has prepared an Articulation Handbook which provides supplemental information to the university's undergraduate catalog. The first six chapters cover general university policies. Each of the last six chapters (white pages) is devoted to one of NIU's undergraduate colleges and includes special information on Transfer Credit and General Education. It is strongly recommended that students consult the handbook while at College of DuPage. Copies of the Articulation Handbook are located in Counseling, Transfer and Advising Services and in the College and Career Information Center (CCIC) in the LRC.
Several NIU departments are limited in admission (e.g. Coms, Csci, El Ed, etc.) The requirements for these programs can be found in the Northern Illinois University Catalog (located in the back of the NIU articulation handbook) and in the departmental information provided in the "white pages" of the NIU Articulation Handbook.
The Art Department at Northern Illinois University reserves the right to require a portfolio review or examination to determine any student's placement and retention in a program or emphasis.
Transfer students planning to enroll in many teacher education program are required to take the Pre-Professional Skills Test or the Illinois Test of Basic Skills. Students majoring in Elementary Education must pass one of these tests prior to attending their first professional course in education. The tests cover reading, writing and mathematics. Students must have a minimum overall 2.5 GPA for admission to teacher education.
For acceptance as a major in any NIU music curriculum, a transfer student must perform a satisfactory audition in his or her major applied area.

CHOICE
OF CATALOG/TRANSFER STUDENTS![]()
Students may use the NIU catalog which was in effect when they became freshmen at their original school or any later NIU catalog, providing they were enrolled during catalog year of their choice, but they can not choose an NIU catalog which was in effect more than three years before their admission to NIU.
However, no student may graduate under a catalog more than five years old, unless specific permission is obtained from the major college in case where the major program in question is still available as an approved program of study.
"W" grades are not counted in NIU calculations of transfer G.P.A.. "I" grades are calculated as an "F" until the incomplete is changed to a letter grade. "R" grades will be used in place of the original grade as long as the original grade was a "D" or "F".
This dual admissions agreement is entered into by Northern Illinois University (NIU) and College of DuPage (COD) in order to create a smooth and seamless process by which COD students will be able to complete a baccalaureate degree at NIU.
Student Eligibility
Students may apply at any point during their attendance at COD; it is recommended that students apply for joint admission as early in their COD careers as possible.
Students must agree in writing to the exchange of academic, admission, and advising information between NIU and COD.
A student must meet all applicable admission requirements of both NIU and COD at the time of joint admission and must maintain a 2.00 GPA at COD and at NIU to remain eligible in the program.
This agreement stipulates admission to NIU, rather than to any particular college or major. Admission to a major requires approval on an official declaration of major form, a procedure necessary for all NIU students.
Students are subject to the same admission, matriculation, and degree requirements governing all other NIU and COD students.
Students' eligibility for continued study at either NIU or COD will be governed by each institution's policies on enrollment of probationary, dismissed, and reentering students.
Once a student is admitted to both COD and NIU, each institution will be able to maintain records on the student comparable to those for any student enrolled at COD or NIU.
At any time before the completion of a COD degree, a student may end the dual admissions agreement and transfer officially to NIU or any other institution of higher education under the usual procedures.
A student will be considered as "concurrently enrolled" if the student chooses to enroll at both NIU and at COD during the same semester/quarter or summer/quarter.
A student will be considered to be enrolled solely at NIU once the student has completed and been awarded an A.A. or A.S. degree at COD; after conversion of matriculation to NIU, the student's subsequent progress toward the bachelor's degree is governed solely by NIU academic standards.
Students interested in the dual agreement will need to complete separate admission applications for COD and NIU by contacting: Judy Pelletier, Coordinator of Advising and Transfer Services (630) 942-2523.
Campus tours are given during the year. Tours leave the Office of Admissions Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. and 12 noon on Saturdays (September through May). No appointment is necessary, but students are advised to call (815) 753-1000 to set up an appointment with an academic advisor in their major.
For further information, contact the Office of Admissions at (815) 753-0446 or toll free at (800) 892-3050.
Admission to NIU's College of Business is no longer limited. Students who are undecided as to which business major they would like to pursue will be place into "Undeclared Business." Students should take as many of the lower division business core courses as possible prior to their transfer to NIU. The NIU College of Business advises students to complete their A. S. or A.A. before transferring.
All students must take UBUS 310 in the first semester in which they take 300-level course work in the College of Business. Students must earn a "C" of better in ACCY 206 (Accounting 151 + 152, 1140); ACCY 207 (Accounting 152 + 153, 1150); MGMT 217 (Buslw 205, 2205); and UBUS 223 (Math 135, 1635) prior to enrollment in UBUS 310. Junior standing is also a prerequisite for UBUS 310. UBUS 311 must be taken no later than the semester or term immediately following completion of UBUS 310.
The Northern Illinois University College of Engineering and Engineering Technology has a Information Guide for Transfer Engineering & Technology Students which is very valuable in identifying required engineering courses which can be completed at the community college level. Another resource is the Articulation Table for currently enrolled College of Engineering and Engineering Technology students. The NIU College of Engineering and Engineering Technology also makes available specific College of Dupage Transfer Guidelines for the B.S. degree.
The total number of students accepted into a Computer Science major at Northern Illinois University is limited by the available resources. A student admitted to NIU with the intention of majoring in computer science is not automatically accepted in the major. A formal application for admission into one of the three computer science emphases will be considered only after the following requirements are completed (no separate application is needed).
1. 45 quarter hours with a minimum 2.50 G.P.A.
2. Completion of the following COD courses:
