Course Description

As a first course in composition at the College, English 101 emphasizes fluency and creativity with the written language. This course looks at composition and the essay

  • first as a process, illustrating the methods many writers employ as they compose,
  • secondly as a whole work, examining its component parts,
  • and finally as a communicative act similar to but different from other ways in which we express our ideas.

The online course is a blend of workshop and tutorial.

Furthermore, English 101 online uses only the internet (including the world wide web) as the classroom and for the class materials. English 101online also explores how we can use computers as tools to learn about writing — tools that can do much more than process words.

Note: It is strongly recommended that you read the Course Info Page first, then the Syllabus, followed by the Course Handbook.
