Course Handbook - Foreword

MS Office for Support Staff, OFTI 161, is a beginning Microsoft Office course utilizing the basic functions of Windows, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. Additional topics include Mail, Faxing, and Object Linking between Word and Excel as well as Information Manager (Outlook) functions. This course is designed for the office support person using office technology or updating software skills. It may not be substituted for CIS108. The prerequisite is keyboarding skills.

This course is designed for the student interested in learning the basics of Microsoft Office 97. The student will begin by becoming familiar with the necessary functions of Windows 95, then progress to Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, integration, Web pages, E-mail, and faxing. A working knowledge and capabilities of each of the programs will be obtained. Needless to say, these skills may not be sufficient for successful performance on the job.

To further your skills in Office 97 after taking OFTI 161, you may want to take OFTI127X—Microsoft Word, CIS106—Introduction to Windows, CIS141—Introduction to Database (Access), CIS146—Introduction to Spreadsheets (Excel), or CIS148—Introduction to Presentation Graphics (PowerPoint).

This on-line course combines textbook readings, exercises, projects, tests, and chat room activity. The method of communication will be through the Internet with all work completed using the computer and submitted via E-mail.

Today, people need software skills especially Microsoft Office 97. This software package is the world's best selling office suite. It has a collection of the more popular Microsoft application software products that work alike and work together as if they were a single program—an integrated package. These applications programs include Word 97, Excel 97, Access 97, PowerPoint 97 and Outlook 97. Microsoft Office 97 integrates these applications with the power of the Internet so you can move easily among applications, transfer text and graphics easily among applications, and interact seamlessly with the World Wide Web. Every application in Office 97 allows you to take advantage of the Internet, the World Wide Web, and Intranets.

This introductory course presents the core application concepts required to perform the basic features of Office 97. No experience with a computer is necessary. Fundamentals of Microsoft Office 97 will be acquired through an exercise-oriented approach that allows you to learn by example.

How to Use This Course Handbook

In this handbook, you will find the information you need to complete the OFTI 161 course. The course consists of eight units. Each unit is presented in this handbook in the same way. It begins with a brief overview of the unit, followed by some objectives for the student, key terms, instructional activities, assignments, which you are to complete and submit to your instructor. Enrichment activities and tests are included to help you review what you have learned.

Overview of the Unit:

This is a brief statement intended to focus your attention on the subject matter.

Objectives of the Unit:

Some general objectives are mentioned here to let you know what is expected of you in this unit. It should give you an idea of what to expect and what kind of things you will be able to do when you successfully complete the unit.

Key Terms:

Familiarize yourself with the key terms.

Learning Activities:

Textbook: The exact sections from the text that you are to read and perform on the computer are listed.

Assignments:

These are activities you are required to complete and submit to your instructor via e-mail. They give you credit toward your course grade.

Enrichment Activities:

These are activities you are required to complete but do NOT submit to your instructor. Answers for the Enrichment Activities can be obtained from the instructor. The activities are self-explanatory. However, should you have a question, call the instructor and discuss it.

Tests:

Each test consists of 20 multiple choice or true/false questions. The tests are taken in the IntraKal system. When you have completed the exam, it will be automatically scored and submitted to your instructor. You will receive the test results immediately.

To take the exam, go to the IntraKal system and click the Exams button in the menu bar at the top of the page .

Class Conferences:

This course will use the bulletin board feature in the Intrakal system to communicate with others in the course. Here is where you can post messages about any Hardware/Software problems, or ask general course questions. Check the bulletin board often.

You will be able to get into bulletin board by clicking on "BBoard" button in the menu bar at the top of the Intrakal page.

Getting Started:

The units are to be done in order. The red menu bar at the top of the page links to the unit identified. When you are ready to begin the course, click on Unit 1.
