![]() |
Overview:As we move from space to our planet, we encounter a layer of gases held by Earth's gravitational force. This atmospheric envelope possesses the oxygen we breathe and cycles the moisture necessary for our survival. It also transfers heat energy derived from the sun to drive meteorological phenomena which we refer to as the weather. Because we are in almost continual contact with the atmosphere our relationship with it is very obvious. Our clothing, activities, and sometimes our moods are heavily dependent on atmospheric conditions. As you complete this unit you will learn about the processes which influence the behavior of the atmosphere and appreciate it as a dynamic and sometimes violent system.
