Verdi’s Otello is often cited
as the greatest Italian opera of the 19th century. Set in Cyprus after
a victorious battle against the Turks, Otello, the conquering general
and Moor of Venice, revels in his victory with his beautiful wife, Desdemona.
But Iago’s envious machinations twist Otello into jealous rage
and ultimately murder. The intrigue of this tragedy is revealed and
intensified through Boito’s poetic libretto beautifully integrated
by Verdi music and brought to life through the collaboration of Maestro
Muspratt and Peter Amster.
Pre-show lecture with Joanne Pitulla: Sunday, Jan. 27, 1 p.m.
