I love being a counselor at C.O.D. It has
been a dream of mine to become a college counselor since I was in college
in 1985. I was inspired by my counselor at Northern Illinois University
who helped me "find
my way" into a field of counseling where I could prosper and excel.
To tell you about myself, I really enjoy assisting students with many
issues that include helping them find their major, adjusting to the
college atmosphere, and getting comfortable with themselves as a person
in the ever changing stages of life. I believe and live by a philosophy
of “Learn from the past, live in the present and anticipate the
future, never spend too much time on any one of those areas.” My
counseling style is one of action and generating options for those
in need. I love teaching Career Development (Education 1105) and College
Success Skills (Education 1115). In these classes students struggle
to discover their future career and how to navigate through the college
experience. I share a lot of my experiences, past and present, to remind
students that everyone truly does have a place in the workforce and
can be successful in college.
In 1994 I graduated with my M.S. Ed in counseling and obtained a job
at C.O.D. as an advisor. After working at other universities, in 2000
I was offered the position of counselor at C.O.D., where I accepted
and have been quite happy ever since. I am currently looking into furthering
my education, by finding and getting accepted into a doctoral program
for counseling and student development.
