Rules
for Effective Decision Making
(From Janis and Mann, 1977, as cited in Jacks, 2000, Instructor’s
Manual and Test Bank to Accompany Exploring Social Psychology)
1. Survey a wide range of objectives to be reached, always taking
into account the multiplicity of values involved.
2. Consider a wide range of possible courses of action.
3. Intensively search for new information relevant to evaluating
the alternatives.
4. Correctly consider and assimilate new information and expert
judgments, even when they do not support the initially preferred course
of action.
5. Reconsider both the positive and negative consequences of
alternatives originally regarded as unacceptable, before making a final
decision.
6. Carefully weigh the negative as well as the positive consequences
that could result from the preferred alternative.
7. Prepare detailed provisions for implementing and monitoring
the chosen course of action, with particular attention to contingency
plans that might be required if known risks were to materialize.
Each of these criteria can be viewed as a continuum; individual groups
can be given a low, medium or high rating. Any gross failure to meet
a criterion is a symptom of defective decision making.
