Native American Studies

Welcome to the College of DuPage program in Native American Studies, an integrated blend of classroom-based academic and experiential learning opportunities that increases knowledge and awareness of Native American cultures, past and present. The program serves those individuals whose personal interests lead them on a quest for knowledge and wisdom of the peoples of the First Nations, as well as professionals in the fields of education, government and health care.

The program’s uniqueness lies in the knowledge and life experiences of our faculty: all members but one are native people connected to their culture’s traditions. Additionally, field study classes have taken students to reservations in Wisconsin, South Dakota, Arizona and New Mexico. Receiving teachings; meeting with local elders, educators, community and spiritual leaders in informal settings; and occasionally participating in or observing ceremony (when appropriate) enhance students’ learning. These experiences generally occur during spring and summer quarters and are described by some as life-changing events.
