College of DuPage offers a certificate in Native American Studies with specific requirements. We recognize that not everyone is interested in the whole program, and you simply may want to take a course or two that would meet your needs.

CORE Curriculum

Social Science 188:
Native American Contemporary Issues – 3 credits

Social Science 188:
Tribal Wisdom and the Modern World – 3 credits

Social Science 188:
The People, the Customs, the Ways – 3 credits

Social Science 188:
Native Americans as Portrayed in U.S. Film – 3 credits

Social Science 188:
Native American Myth and Mythology – 3 credits

Social Science 188:
Native Americans and Their Mystic Visions – 3 credits

English 290:
Native American Literature – 5 credits

History 188: Two options
Native Americans: Treaties, Government and Law – 3 credits
or
Native America: Pre-History of the Americas – 3 credits


Electives: 3 credits.
Any course not included in the list above.

Students are encouraged to consult with the program coordinator at any time for guidance and direction.
For those who are interested in the certificate, the requirements are as follows:

As of Fall Quarter 2001, each student must successfully complete the 29-quarter hour core curriculum plus one elective course with a grade of "B" or better in each class.

Each student must successfully complete two separate field class experiences to two different reservations with a grade of "B" or better in each class.

Select two different Reservation class experiences. These are generally offered during spring and/or summer quarters. Credit hours vary from 4 to 10, depending on the length of the program.
