College of DuPageAcademic Independent Study

What are Independent Study/
Special Projects?

This self-directed program allows students to design and complete their own unique courses of study. Done in consultation with an under the supervision of a faculty member, the study/project is usually beyond the scope or depth of a normal classroom course.

High motivation, self-direction, persistence and good study habits are necessary ingredients to successful completion of an independent study/special project. In planning and executing the project, students are required to thoroughly plan and document their project. This is done by completing a learning agreement form jointly with the supervising instructor.

Special studies/projects may involve a variety of possibilities including, but not limited to:
• A major research paper
• Written reports of selected readings
• Library and laboratory research
• Field observations
• Creative writing
• Studio projects
