Clinical Laboratory Science

CAREER OVERVIEW
A clinical lab scientist (CLS) performs a variety of full-range laboratory tests. The results of these tests help physicians evaluate, diagnose and monitor medical treatment. Many of these complex laboratory tests uncover diseases such as AIDS, diabetes and leukemia.

A CLS is also responsible for confirming the accuracy of test results by maintaining and performing quality control on the high level of instrumentation found within the laboratory. A clinical lab scientist must work quickly and accurately, as the information they provide to the physician influences the medical treatment a patient receives.

A CLS does much more than examine specimens through a microscope. They operate complex instrumentation and correlate precision instruments. There are five major areas in the clinical laboratory: blood bank, hematology and coagulation, chemistry, immunology, and microbiology.

CLS TRANSFER PROGRAM AT C.O.D.
College of DuPage offers a two-plus-two transfer program in Clinical Lab Science. Students complete an Associate in Science (A.S.) degree at C.O.D. with a concentrated emphasis in science courses. Students then transfer to one of the universities C.O.D. has an agreement with to complete a bachelor’s degree in Clinical Lab Science.

Upon completion, a student will deliver accurate laboratory test results to physicians and will function as an integral member of a health care team with competence and confidence.
