The mathematical sciences have always been important to society
and the advancement of knowledge. Today, mathematics has assumed new
importance with each technological advance. Disciplines within the natural
sciences, as well as the social and behavioral sciences, are becoming
more quantitative, so their practitioners require more mathematics.
Additionally, mathematics continues to excite the imagination of individuals
who study it for its own intrinsic beauty and force of logic.
People with degrees in mathematics become teachers, actuaries, statisticians,
theoretical computer scientists, mathematical modelers and marketing researchers,
just to name a few occupations. Although some people in these areas have
just a concentration of mathematics in their educational background, many
have bachelor's or post-graduate degrees in mathematics. Now and in the
future, demand for mathematics teachers will be constant. Many employers
are looking for employees with strong mathematics, problem-solving and
critical thinking skills.
The Mathematics program at College of DuPage prepares students for a
mathematics major at a baccalaureate-granting institution and provides
support courses for other disciplines.
Students with little or no background in mathematics may take courses
in arithmetic and algebra. Other courses include pre-calculus, calculus,
linear algebra, differential equations, statistics and discrete mathematics.
A mathematics major generally begins with calculus. However, if a student's
background is deficient, remedial courses are required. Students interested
in completing a bachelor's degree in mathematics should consult with a
faculty adviser listed below. |
