Journalism

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Specialized skills in writing, speaking and designing for the mass media help journalism students find employment in the print and electronic job markets around the world. Gain an associate in arts degree along with experience earned on College of DuPage's award-winning publications: the weekly Courier student newspaper, the 24/7 Courier Web Edition, the semi-annual Chaparral features magazine and the annual COD Today orientation issue.

Most professional writing, speaking and teaching positions in the mass media require a bachelor's or a master's degree in journalism or a related field. The first two years of college can firmly set the student's educational groundwork because of close ties to mass media employers through part-time employment in cooperative education and internships.

The Journalism and Mass Communication program at College of DuPage includes year-round cooperative education and internship experiences at public relations outlets, the college's public radio station, area newspapers and local government agencies.

Many area high school teachers use the Journalism and Mass Communication program for continuing education credit to meet state certification requirements. Graduates and professional journalists enroll in courses to renew and sharpen their interviewing and writing skills.

Journalism careers require a strong commitment to continuing education. Specialty courses in mass media law and ethics provide the professional and novice with the newest information on legal issues. The constant need to update computer skills and knowledge also propels students, professionals and graduates into classes such as those offered by College of DuPage.

The Journalism and Mass Communication program integrates its course work with that of the English, speech, graphic arts, marketing, photography, advertising design and illustration, and multimedia arts programs to provide an opportunity to blend professionals and students into a cohesive class of lifelong learners.
