CAREER
OPPORTUNITIES
The field of criminal justice is expected to continue to grow in
the next decade.
Higher education is becoming increasingly important to careers in all
three major components of the criminal justice system: law enforcement,
courts and corrections. Advanced education also is important in the field
of private security management.
The decisions made by law enforcement officers, probation officers, corrections
counselors and others in the field may have life or death implications;
it is critical that these decision makers be educated, prepared professionals.
Essential to success in the criminal justice field are excellent communication
skills and an understanding of human behavior and motivation. A bachelor's
degree is the minimum preparation for some positions in the criminal
justice field; a bachelor's degree is required for work with federal
agencies, probation and court services, and some areas of security management.
The Criminal Justice program at College of DuPage provides students pursuing
a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and law enforcement with a two-year
foundation of coursework toward that program. The associate in arts degree
combines courses in communication, social and behavioral sciences, humanities,
and other areas with criminal justice elective courses. |
