CAREER
OPPORTUNITIES
Human service professionals work in a variety of fields including
addictions counseling, corrections, developmental disabilities, domestic
violence, eating disorders, gerontology, mental health and residential
child care. They also can work in business as employee assistance counselors.
Many jobs in these fields are available at the certificate (one year)
and associate in applied science degree (two years) levels, but employment
in mental health, eating disorders and employee assistance usually requires
a baccalaureate or master's degree. Students are encouraged to continue
their studies toward a higher degree after employment, since the field
is moving toward bachelor's and master's degrees. Also, advancement
often is contingent on higher degrees.
Employment seems favorable over the next two to five years. Students
who train in more than one area and prepare for a changing job market
will enhance their chances for employment. Individuals with good skills
in communication and listening, conflict resolution and clarification,
and computer usage enhance their success in the human services field.
The Human Services program at College of DuPage offers learning experiences
that focus on the essential knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to
help people. Emphasis is on training students to deliver professional
services that help clients in their biopsychosocial growth.
Students may choose from many theoretical and experience-based learning
opportunities. Courses deal with interpersonal relations, group processes,
communications, advocacy, addictions, prejudice, methods of changing
behaviors, and the nature of institutions and organizations. Students
are encouraged to take a wide selection of courses in behavioral sciences.
Classroom experiences are combined with field trips and on-the-job placements.
Students in other fields such as marketing, nursing or occupational
therapy can also benefit from some Human Services courses. Anyone looking
for greater self awareness or knowledge of others can benefit from these
classes.
